A New York-based magazine, the Business Insider, has confirmed a former Nigerian federal lawmaker, Chief Sam Onuigbo, as one of the 30 Top Global Leaders on climate change.
Onuigbo, who is a member of the Governing Board (South-East), North East Development Commission, was the Chairman, House Committee on Security, Climate Change and Special Interventions.
A statement issued in Umuahia on Wednesday by Onuigbo’s Media Aide, Mr Emeka Oruh, stated that “Onuigbo was recognised as championing collectivism, community and accountability in a global collaboration to address the existential issues associated with climate change”.
Oruh further stated that the award was based on Onuigbo’s leadership on Climate Action in Africa and the world, “and a growing commitment to continue to drive just climate action globally”.
According to the statement, Onuigbo, while accepting the recognition, said: “Science and events around us tell us that our world will be destroyed, if we do not take action immediately.
“So, there is no time for more talk. This should be all about action, action!”
Onuigbo, who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency (2015 to 2023), sponsored the country’s Climate Change Act.
The statement added that he has continued to be in the forefront of driving climate action in Nigeria, Africa and the world.
